Valentine Post Box

Flashback: Third grade. Red construction paper Valentine's Day envelopes stapled to the bulletin board just waiting to be filled to overflowing with love notes from friends and secret admirers. Do you remember the little while doily that was Elmer's school-glued to the front? I can still smell the glue.

I hated that day in school! Your palms would sweat just hoping that somebody, somewhere, somehow had pity on your pencil skirt and would send you a Valentine. It was brutal. The teacher always tried to make sure every kid got a card but it seemed, even then, that the popular cliques were already formed and somebody's feelings always got hurt.

I still think my mother mailed mine in to the school just to make sure I got one.
But I survived. That was third grade. This is ......not. If you'll recall, my boyfriend in grade school was the brainy principal's son. Who wanted to make HIM mad? It was a sure thing for Valentine's Day. For a while. Until Little Susie Swinger shook her blond ponytail a little too close to babycake's bookmark.
Sigh.
Just thinking about it makes my palms sweat all over again.

So, I'll be boycotting this year in a private protest but I did find this cute idea for bloggers who'd like to play the childish "send me a Valentine" game. As you can see, I've decided to play. Why not? It might be fun. So, if you're inclined - romantically or not - you can send me an anonymous Valentine in the little box above.

No one can see what you write but me. I'll open them on February 14th and maybe....just maybe.....my third grade crush will appear once again. It could happen! There's a link below if you'd like one for your own blog. Happy Love Day to all my blogging friends!

OK please forward me all the name of the boys from your third grade class so I can write to them and tell them they blew it! They could have been on the arm of a queen, but nooo. What were they thinking?

Happy boycots day. Let's see Hallmark come up with a card for that!

My son is in third grade now, and I'm not even sure they're going to have a party this year.

I know. Weird, huh?

If I didn't have to sign up to send you a valentine I would have participated. So, I'll just leave one here.

I hope you have a wonderful Valentine's Day that includes a hot date with Mr. Right.

How's that? Big hug. :)

Elementary school is hard for girls. We notice boys so much sooner than they notice us. Every year, I'd hope that one particular boy would write more than his name & mine on the Transformers valentine he dropped in my heart-covered paper bag... *sigh*

Oh Mimi, I wish I'd had your mailing address and I would have sent you one out with my friends. I love sending all the little hearts and candies to my buddies and little nephews and niece. And I would've sent you one too!

You really brought back memories with that white heart doily. Our school made you bring one for everybody. But I would get embarrased when some yucky boy would give me one a little too cute for my taste and my friends would tease me. The school years were full of boys and gifts and V love. Then my early 20s there were dozens of roses and candy and competition for my heart. Then somehow from about 26 until 35 there was nothing. All the Valentines were married except me! No boyfriends to send things. All the girls at work traipsing their silly roses up and down the hall and I hated V day. I guess I got mine back. Single with a career but no V love. Then finally my hubby came along and the rest is history.

So trust me I was paid back for those elementary years with Valentine's galore! lol.

I remember those days. I have all the empathy in the world for those unlucky recipients...For instance, you have to feel for poor Charlie Brown who got none while Snoopy got lots of Valentines...

Jeff - I think in hindsight, most of those guys would be in the dungeon by now anyway....And thanks for the wishes!

Songbird - No party for Valentine's? Huh. Some schools won't do it now because it infringes on others' religious beliefs. Seriously!

Bee - Thanks. I can't wait to see what Sarge has in store for you on Valentine's. You two are very romantic.

Sandee - A "hot date with Mr. Right" is just what I want right now. You nailed it.

Jean-Luc - Appreciate the visit. We shall see if my third grade crush shows up....

Bundle - Ohh...the Transformers Valentine? That brings back memories. Shudder.

Vinny - Awww.....you are such an awesome friend. Thank you.

Deana "All the Valentines were married except me"....what a great line. That's exactly how I feel right now. Not that I particularly want to be married, it's just that Valentine's Day is weird this year! I'll be asleep that day. Wake me when it's over.....

Ralph - I DO remember feeling bad for Charlie Brown. And truthfully, it is emotionally brutal for a lot of kids that day.

Hey Mimi! I know you tagged me for a blog, but I've been ill for a while now, so I'm slow in getting caught up. Just wanted you to know that I remember!

Actually Valentine's Day wasn't that much of a focused tradition when I was young in Norway. My first real experience I had was when my American wife came into my life and now I dig it as we always do something special for each other at that day.
Her first treat was to decorate the hall in our house with family pictures - I think that was so cute.

Hope you'll have a good one this year ;-)

Much of my elementary school was in a "Friends" school in Tasmania and I don't remember ever doing Valentine's Day. I may have just blocked it out, w ho knows.

I'd put one of those up, but would die of no one sent me any notes. lol
