Baby Boy's In A Plane, Mimi's In a Panic (Update!)

8:55 AM Sunday morning

"Guess where I am, Mimi... I'm at the airport!!" (as if I didn't know) "and this time I'm afraid of flying." (this time? This is the first time)

Baby Boy is on a Southwest plane to Disneyworld - his first flight - as we blogspeak. I just talked to him as he waited at the gate to board. This is what he had to say.

"I had to take my shoooeeesss off! (we'd already discussed this at length last night during our Christmas tree frolicking to which he emphatically told me "I'm NOT taking my shoes off at the airport." WHY WHY WHY do I have to take my shoes off, Mimi?!" over and over again. ) It was his main concern. This morning he was upset because he had to let go of his stuffed dog during the security check. "They put him in a bucket!" he said with great indignation.

At times like this I can see Pencil Skirt's blood running through his veins.
No X-Ray machine needed.

They will be holding court with Mickey Mouse for seven days.
I will be holding court with a few wing-holding angels the next hour and 40 minutes thank you very much if you don't mind who shall station themselves on each wing and wink at the blue-eyed boy. I pray they carry my family safely to Florida and calm the fears of this very excited but hysterical ME ME..... child.

He was OK once I told him he got to walk through a tunnel to get to the plane.

"When I get in the air," he said, " the cars and the trees and the houses will look like toys. They'll be reeeeaal little."

"Right, Sweetie."

"Will I be little too?"

"No, Baby Boy. You will stay the same size." (This totally cracked me up)

He should be listening to the flight instructions about now (I already told him in great detail anyway) I just hope he doesn't interrupt and say "But Mimi said this!"

I forgot to tell him not to ask WHY.
Maybe I'd better pray for pilot patience too.
Be right back.

**Update: 2:00 pm** The phone rings. "Mimi! I flied in a plane all the way to here."
"Wow," I said. "Was it fun?"
"No. Not really."
And then he left to go "check his ears" because they popped on the plane.
Margo has suggested I warn Disney. Good idea.

WE were apprehensive when we took our grandchildren on a plane for the first time that they would be frightened, too excited, sick. Not a bit - they were bored! "When can we get off and see bladibladiblah?" they kept asking. :)

Ergh. I have to get on a plane this Friday to fly to Florida, and I am NOT looking forward to it. I get very bored and antsy, just like a little kid.

I can understand your worry. Children are wonderful, but when they're away from you it is scary. I'm sure he'll be fine.

Of course he doesn't want to let go of his shoes... he's smart.

Akelamalu - Oh how he was disappointed when I told him that his Webkinz electronic game could not be played on the plane. You're right. He maybe be bored. But I would love to be a fly on the plane wall...

Desert - Flying is not my favorite sport either. I'll say a little prayer for you too. Need a wing angel?

Mimi Lenox said...

Charles - His mother will take good care of him I'm sure. It's her first flight too....!

Mimi Lenox said...

Anndi - Ha! You do have a point. He asks the most interesting questions. In fact, his new word is that's i-n-t-e-r-e-s-t-i-n-g and then "WHY is that interesting?"

Hugs and prayers for the little one and for you.

As a white knuckle flyer, I completely understand your apprehension. But consider this: there is a better chance The Boy will be struck by lightning than anything happening to his plane. Also, he is 100 times safer flying than he is in the car between the airport and Disney World.

I've probably given you new things to worry about, and if so, I'm sorry. Just trying to help.

Lisa - Prayers and hugs always appreciated here. Thank you.

Lee - Statistics matter not to my panic. (but thanks for trying....) I'll be OK. Just as soon as they land which should have already happened. WHY isn't the phone ringing???

It is definitely enlightening to see things through a childs eyes.

My darling "little ones" (now ages 13, 12 and 8) live on the East Coast and I live on the West. And they just happen to refer to me as "MIMI". Two years ago they flew out to visit... I can feel your anxiety. Life as I knew it came to an end until I picked them up at the airport. It took a while for the fingernails to grow back too.

Mimi Lenox said...

Queen - Isn't it? He keeps me on my toes.

Carol - And they still haven't called and the phone is still going to voicemail. Neither grandmother has heard from them. My fingernails are beginning to dwindle too. OK. This is not funny.

He's landed all safe and enthused and happy by now. Yay!

Have you warned Disney yet?

Mimi Lenox said...

Very funny wiseguy Jean-luc....

Mimi Lenox said...

He just called. "Mimi! I flied in a plane all the way here!"

Was it fun? I asked.

"Not really."

I laughed and then he went to check his ears because they popped. lol

Mimi Lenox said...

Margo - I'd better make that call right now. You're right.

Barb - I should be taking notes. Oh yeah....I am.

Mimi Lenox said...

Giggles - Vulnerability is my middle name. Oh! You mean Baby Boy..or not.

Travis Cody said...

You should have told him that the security people are very careful with woobies when they put them through the machines. And they let you walk around the airport with no shoes! How fun is that???

Too bad you couldn't go and experience Disney with him.

Mimi Lenox said...

Travis - Then he would have gone walk-about in the airport and we would have had an international crisis on our hands.

hehe he's so cute :) i had to send my girls to their dad's by themselves for the 1st time the 2nd christmas here. i was freaked. they were a little bit scared, but o.k. they made it safe, but their dad was about 10 mins or so late getting there. i could have killed him. that freaked them out more than anything. hubby says something about my always being early at the airport when it's time to pick them up...i remind him that i will never have my children me in fear that i'm not there waiting for them. EVER.

i'm glad baby boy made it safe...he's going to have fun :)

I'm surprised he didn't enjoy the flying...maybe in a few years he will find it more fun.

I would have been nervous like you. But he no doubt will have a great time there!

Mimi Lenox said...

Blogger is eating comments again. Repeating myself....

Ciara - Your kids on a plane and no hubby to greet them? I would have been beside myself. Yes, he is having a wonderful time.

Julie said...

Oh Mimi! THis is so cute. I'm glad he got there safely and didn't cause the pilot any problems.

Oh....did you omit that part?

Mimi Lenox said...

Julie - I told you not to tell that part! You and Baby Boy have soooo much in common.
