I've Had My Twelve Minutes of Fame

Mimi: It's a car
Common Sense: I can see that
Mimi: A CAR
Common Sense: Yes, Mimi, a car.
Mimi: It goes fast
Common Sense: Sometimes
Mimi: Even when you don't want it to.

Common Sense: But but but you LOVE to drive
Mimi: Correction smarty pants, I did love to drive.
Common Sense: But how are you going to take all those vain hair-hanging-out-the-window pictures for your blog if you won't get in the car?
Mimi: I'll find something else to fall out of. Something less dangerous.

Mimi: Did you know that someone dies in a car accident every 12 minutes in this country?
CS: Yes, but...
Mimi: I've had my twelve minutes of fame. I'm done!

CS: Look, you've been driving all these years and never had a major accident until now
Mimi: Your point is...?
CS: Never in allllll these years..right?
Mimi: Are you trying to say I'm old?
CS: How old are you?
Mimi: Never you mind. I should have known not to try to talk some sense into you.
Common Sense: I'll bet you never drove a horse and buggy
Mimi: Think again....

CS: My point is ALLTHESE YEARS and this is the first time surely...
Mimi: It was almost my LAST time, smart aleck.
CS: What are the statistical probabilities that you will get in another accident anytime soon?
Mimi: Do you read my blog?
Common Sense: Good point. Let me rephrase

Common Sense: Get in the car.
Mimi: Nope
Common Sense: Get IN the car
Mimi: Nope
Common Sense: Just open the door
Mimi: Nope
Common Sense: How are you going to get to the store?
Mimi: Baby Boy thinks I should have bought a shopping cart so I could look where I'm going better.
CS: What does Baby Boy know about driving? He's seven!!
 Mimi: And he's never had an accident has he?..
CS: Soooo...
  Mimi: and do you know whyyyyy?
CS: Do tell
Mimi: Because he doesn't own a car .

Are you gonna get in the car?
Maybe tomorrow.

Look at it this way...it was the road NOT the car ;)

Good point, StarrBaby. Have you been talking to my common sense?

I was in a wreck many years ago, and know exactly how you feel. Trust me, time will ease the fear. That's just how life works, another day brings you a step closer and a step farther.
Until then, you can come stay with me ... there is a mall across the street (( smile ))
Hang in there Mimi, we are all thinking of you, and are so happy to see your strength returning

Speedy - A mall? And you? Come pick me up. Do you have side, front, ceiling and floor airbags?

well i'm a suburb girl and can't imagine not having my car, but i can understand needing some time to feel comfortable again.

You are definately a designated driver.

Red Shoes said...

The main thing is... with the shopping cart, you may have boogered up a nail... you got out light... you were lucky... ;o)

From what I can see of it, I like your new car!

Mimi Lenox said...

Coopernicus - Are you sayin' I'm old? Hmmmm??

Goddess - I love to drive. I want the "love" part to come back. As in yesterday.

Mimi Lenox said...

Jean-Luc - Are you sayin' I'm old too? Hmmmm??

Shoes - See email. Yep. Yep.

My family, friends and I have had our share of wrecks...getting back in a car as a driver or a passenger is hard afterwards.

I don't think you are old :)

Mimi Lenox said...

Shannon - Oh, sorry to hear that. I wonder which is harder...being the driver or a passenger. Hmmm... Neither one is easy.

(and thank you!!)

Sir Tom Eagerly, says:
They don't let Sir Tom drive anymore, Mimi. I'd only drunk a vat of a rather nice Claret. I could nip over there and chaffeur for you if Lady Eagerly lets me off the the leash (literally!) I am toasting your good health and wishing you well.

Hmmm. I remember what I wrote, trying to cheer you up - NOT. I remember blathering on about the accident I had and how I still have bad feelings when I cross the intersection. That's like talking to a pregnant woman and telling her all the delivery horror stories...
Speedie is right. You still have moments but they get better. It's like an "echo" of what happened, not a thunderclap!
Fear will eventually fade and your love of driving will overcome.
Take care...
~~~Blessings~~~
p.s. And I'm the "old" one around here!
Sarge Charlie said...
I can out-old Gracie and common sense has got it right, life is here to live it everyday and then it is over, go for it girl.......
Mimi Lenox said...
Sir Tom - YOU are one person I would NOT ride with. You and your wine drinking ways....Lord. But thanks for your concern, Sir Tom.
I hope the Missus isn't mad at you for writing this post. Are you drinking again?
Mimi Lenox said...
Gracie - You? Old? Not a chance. Echoes DO sound better than thunderclaps. Thanks!
Sarge "life is here to live it everyday and then it is over"
And sometimes just like that.
Well said. (girl is "going"...smile)
Mimi Lenox said...
Jamie! - I should have known you'd come up with a devilish plan. Now I will giggle before I even approach the car because of what you just wrote. I am blushing thinking about touching my car. Bwwaaahhhhhaaaa
Vinny "Bond" Marini said...
Hey...when you total 2 cars within 24 hours, you can talk about never getting in a car again...
NOW DRIVE!
Mimi Lenox said...
Vinny - I want to hear that story. I think.
For what it's worth -- 1) I don't own a car and haven't driven since the Reagan years and it doesn't really restrict my life at wall -- though I do take cabs and 2) Still, when I share #1 with people, they are regularly shocked, as though I just told them I keep a human head in my freezer.
So if you want to avoid those looks of trepidation and amazement, you better get back behind the wheel, Your Highness.
Dear Mimi,
I am bit late but read all the posts.. first of all let me tell you 'your guardian angel is right there with you'
i was in a wreck too and totaled my car.. i just learn to drive in 2009.. and the wreck was in 2010 march.. it was a hit and run and it ended up in my record:) the first thing on my mind was 'thank you God, my babies are not with me'
i didn't start back driving till june.. simply because i didn't have a car...
love you dear
sending you good thoughts and prayers.
I'm glad to hear you're doing so well. I have been in 3 fairly serious accidents, and I can tell you, I would much rather be a driver than a passenger. I have a bit of a control issue, and there are still some people I can't be a passenger with. It might take you some time, but you will eventually get back behind the wheel again.
It's like they say, when you fall off a horse, you have to get back on. The longer you wait, the more anxious you will feel about it. I was car 4 of 4 in a bad accident and still can't believe I was unharmed (the car was in the shop a month). The best thing was to get back behind the wheel. I hope you feel better about this soon. Glad you're ok.
Travis Cody said...
Let's see...it wasn't really the car, it was the tires that lost traction. But then it may not really have been the tires, but the standing water on the road that forced you to hydroplane.
And the car kept you safe despite all the flipping and tumbling.
See? Problem solved! Now you can love driving again...just as soon as your psyche catches up with your common sense. There's no rushing that part.
Mimi Lenox said...
Gal - I remember now that you don't drive. I don't think that's odd for a city gal at all.
I have been driving some since this post.And wouldn't you know it? The first trip to the store with Baby Boy in the car and we get caught in a thunderstorm. Lots of rain and standing water on the road.
I had to pull over AFTER I'd talked to him about facing fears (there was no fooling the child)...I hope his new Match cars distracted him in the backseat from the obvious fact that we weren't moving!!
It was a wise choice for me to pull over and get a grip.A hyperventilating driver is never good. But we made it home.
Mimi Lenox said...
Bindhi - You too??! It's an epidemic! Yes, thank God you weren't seriously hurt and your babies are safe. Thanks for commenting. Hugs.
Mimi Lenox said...
Camie - I do think the "no control" fear as a passenger would be worse. Although I was driving...I think I'm going to choose my drivers carefully from now on too. Thanks for the tip!
Mimi Lenox said...
Camie I meant to say "Tara"
Mimi Lenox said...
Victor - As long as it's not raining I think I'll be ok for awhile. The rain scares the livin' bejeebus out of me.
Maybe I shouldn't have read so much information lately on the subject of hydroplaning.
Thank you dear peaceable cat....
Mimi Lenox said...
Travis - Your common sense again previals. May I borrow some, please?
lime said...
just catching up here on this post and the last one. i can very easily believe the thoughts you had in those terrifying moments and i can understand that even though it defies common sense you aren't wanting to get in a car these days. you've been through quite a lot. be gentle with yourself and just take small steps toward driving again. ride with others for a while, then just back down your driveway. then just go around the block. just go easy. 2 years ago i had a head on collision when i hydroplaned. it took a wile for me to want to drive again. i'm fine with it now but i have to admit i still avoid that particular stretch of road.
Mimi Lenox said...
Lime - Head on hydroplaning. OH MY LORD. I know that was terrifying. I know I know!
I hope you weren't injured too badly.
I have such a healthy respect for weather conditions now.
The thing is...I have to drive. There is no one here but me. If I want to eat, I have to drive...If I need supplies, I have to drive.
So I'm doing it slowly. But I don't like it much.
And what about vacation? The beach is calling. I don't physically feel up to that yet but I know that ocean air and water will heal so much that ails me right now - right down to the muscles.
Maybe I can drive 30 minutes and stop for awhile. A four hour trip with lots of stops...mmmmaybve.....but if it rains, I'm pulling into a restaurant until it's over.
That is horrifying to me.
White-knuckle horrifying.
Great stuff.
BTW, I don't drive, and generally feel that drivers - not you, mind you - have no idea what they're doing, based on near misses as a pedestrian, bicyclist and car passenger, plus one accident that put me in the hospital, and another which broke a rib.
Mimi Lenox said...
Roger - Ouch!! You could do all that just crossing the street. Maybe I'll just stay in..
Ferd said...
Coming off of a week long stint at work, trying to catch up with my fav bloggers. I'm so late! I hate it!
All I'll say is that CS is over rated. It's okay to listen to your feelings. Maybe you'll drive again (probably) and maybe you won't (I've heard of that happening.) Either way, you'll figure out how to get around.
Hope you're feeling better!
:-)
Mimi Lenox said...
Ferd - I am driving (slowly). I am driving (carefully)
I am driving (and having panic attacks)
I am driving (because I have to)
It's getting better....Thanks for commenting.
