Mimi In A Minute #24 ~ When Words Aren't Needed

These things keep me up at night. They give me a headache.
I just need sixty seconds of your time to unclog my pencil brain so that I can get some sleep.
Do you mind?
I have a few things to say. This is Mimi unplugged.
Hide your children.

To say that this week's feature simply "keeps me up at night" is a gross understatement. Given the seriousness of the news in the last ten days I find it impossible to get sound sleep much less offer my usual snark-laden take on current affairs. The news is too raw for that today. What can I say that hasn't already been said?

Here's to many more Moments of Silence between those in Congressional leadership
Funny. I don't hear bickering.
And let me also learn to keep my own mouth shut and listen to the silence before I speak....

Representative Gabrielle Giffords (D) Arizona: Your presence at the supermarket spoke volumes about democracy, servitude, and freedom of speech. Your absence at this moment is even louder.
Democracy wins.

To those murdered and wounded in the Arizona shooting spree: Healing and peace are spiritual concepts. One has to experience both to believe the existence of either. No utterance, or lack of, will change that experience. I hope you have both in glorious abundance.

Sarah Palin: Remember: You are also free NOT to speak.

To the "church" in Kansas hellbent on fratespeech (that's free + hate for all you non-blog speakers) at the funerals.

Would you picket your own 9-year-old daughter's funeral if she'd fallen in that parking lot? I will never understand how you speak Jesus and hate with the same lips.
To President Barack Obama: You are at your best when delivering words of hope and comfort. Even if your presidency wanes and fades into history books, no man can say you were ever anything less than eloquent and inspiring when you spoke from your heart.

No one can say you don't believe that words are powerful.

To the parents of the shooter in Tucson:
My heart hurts for you too. It must be an unspeakable cross to bear.

To Daniel Hernandez and all those who demonstrated incredible acts of selflessness, bravery and compassion on the scene:
You are not just what makes America great, you are what makes humanity great.

So. We get it. But just because civil discourse has declined on both sides of the aisle does not mean it has died.
We need a refresher course on the discourse.

To the news media: PLEASE stop displaying that smiling picture of the killer. He's had much more than enough fame and it turns my stomach.

About this fear of guns: While attention is rightly focused on our elected officials at the moment, please understand that each and every day a teacher walks into a classroom, a professor stands in a lecture hall or a police officer approaches a car window ....that same unspoken fear beats loud and clear.

Words: Choose them wisely. You can't take them back.

No words needed

Whew! I feel better. Thanks for listening.
Sixty seconds flew by. I think my blogsomnia is cured.
Lights out.

I'm having a very hard time shaking this story, too. It represents so much about us, for good and ill. Thank you for final photo choice. Eloquent as always, your highness.

As are you, my dear.

Very nice...

I am in total agreement about that photo of the demon... why keep showing it??

Being a political moderate, I'm tired of both sides and their bickering and ranting. I am ready for it to stop.

Beautifully worded and totally in line with one of my favorite quotes:

"I don't think writers are sacred, but words are. They deserve respect. If you get the right ones in the right order, you might nudge the world a little or make a poem that children will speak for you when you are dead."

— Tom Stoppard (The Real Thing)

Gal - I realized a couple days ago that this uneasiness in my soul I can't shake is directly tied to this event. As you said, it strikes at the heart of sooo many things in our society and in our daily lives.

Mimi Lenox said...

Travis - I appreciate that.
You know...I really need to take off the Christmas hat.

Shoes - On the other hand, I don't want ANY photo of him on the news. The first one seen of him smiling and enjoying a sunny day was equally insulting.

Jamie - What a wonderful quote!! Thank you for sharing this with us.

I put up my official welcome of you to the Trailmix crowd plus a lonely hearts advertisement for any available Prince Charmings.

Your words reflect what's in my heart. Thank you for putting them out here for all to read.

The media would not exist (re: have the ability to sell ads at exorbitant rates) were it not for demons, brainless celebrities, mass murder, airplane crashes and public figures leaving courthouses with raincoats over their heads. The tv news programs should drop their current titles in deference to reality: "The (network of your choice) Salacious Events of the Day".
So we all have to drop the illusion that news sources (tv, internet, newspapers, weekly mags) deliver 'news'. They deliver what will boost revenues. Besides Rupert Murdoch will own every paper, radio and tv outlet before too long as the FCC has all the power of a toothless Garfield on valium.
I agree that Obama is at his best when he speaks from the heart, but as I watched his speech last night I wondered "Does he ever speak from the heart anymore or is every word he says scripted by speech writers"?
As for civil discourse....it's tough to find these days at all levels. What should be our primary example, our elected leaders, abandoned civil discourse about 20 years ago. They continue to talk the talk, but the walkway is littered with bodies from all parties.
As you can tell, this event has raised the bar on my level of cynicism. I do feel empathy for those injured or killed in this attack and their families. The surprise factor, however, escapes me. Given all the events and attitudes exhibited throughout the world and watching the slow demise of our false economy, more and more people will reach their breaking point in the years to come. The one shred of hope I keep is that these folks find ways to calm their fears and frustrations in a non-violent manner.

Jamie - Prince Charmings are always welcome in the castle. Thank you.

Christine - I wonder how the wounded are doing. Has anyone heard about the others who were shot? We don't hear about them very much.

Mimi Lenox said...

Coop - No, it wasn't surprising. And that is a sad commentary in and of itself.
