Saturday 9 with Mimi Queen of Memes: At The Beach

Every Saturday Crazy Sam promises her readers "just a silly meme" of nine questions on her blog Saturday 9. This week she is right on time with a crazy summer meme. What does Samantha want to do this week? She takes her meme to the beach. Let's go along, shall we?

Saturday 9: At the Beach

1. Do you plan to be at the beach this summer?

I would like to be at the beach this summer, yes.

2. Do you have a favorite beach?
That would be like having a favorite meme or a favorite crown. I cannot choose.
All beaches are good.

3. How old were you on your first beach trip?

I was around 10 years old. My parents always rented the same beach cottage every year at Salter Path, North Carolina near Emerald Isle, Indian Beach and just south of Atlantic Beach. My favorite memories of the beach are of the four of us covering my dad with sand (he would stay there forever!) - he said he was "cool" under there with only his feet and head sticking out - and then we would build a huge sandcastle around him so he couldn't "escape." I always hated to see the sand break up around his body when it was time for him to get up. We worked so hard to get it just right! Funny the things you remember.....

4. Did your folks own or rent a cottage at the beach?
See #3. The same cottage every year for years. it was called The Susie-Q! My parents usually had couple friends down throughout the week, my grandparents, uncles, aunts, cousins would drive down. A house full of kids (four of us) and sometimes our best friends came along too. Lots of people. At night the grownups would play cards until the wee hours of the morning around a round table on the deck. They laughed so much we couldn't sleep!

We'd tiptoe through the living room to spy on them and before we could even think about faking them out with a "I'm thirsty" story we'd hear "Get back to bed!"

I now understand about grownup time but back then it was sooo mysterious and going to sleep was just boring. My uncles liked to fish and the back of the cottage faced Bogue Sound. I remember my mother and her chatty friends would lay out in the sun for hours while we played in the sand or walked on the beach hunting sanddollars and shells.

5. Have you or would you bring your kids to the same beaches you went to as a kid?

My ex-husband and I did take our son to the same beach and stayed in the Susie-Q many years later with my parents and other family members for a week.
My son was two at the time. We had a great time that year.

6. What type of bathing suit do you wear at the beach?

Queens do not wear bathing suits, silly Sam.

I always wore bikinis but now prefer one-piece royal blue suits (ha ha) since taking to my throne. The sun does not suit my royal delicacies and I'm always slathered with SPF55. I burn to a crisp in the summer without it. Like my predecessor Queen Elizabeth I, I have rather pale skin that does not fare well in the heat. And no, Sam, Queens do not sweat. We "glisten."

I did find a rather wind-blown bikini photo from sometime around 1983 taken at Atlantic Beach, North Carolina while staying at the Susie-Q.

It would take a minor miracle for me to reveal it here.
Or a severe sunburn to the head.

7. Do you have favorite food you like to eat at the shore?

There is nothing like fresh seafood (duh) at the coast.
Scallops are my favorite.

8. Do you have a favorite drink you like at the shore?
I know it's un-American not to say something really cool like Fruity Margaritas (Bud will laugh at that....Are there fruity margaritas?) or some exotic sounding alcoholic beverage with a sassy umbrella on the side but the truth is, no.

I love iced tea (as in Southern iced tea) but a boyfriend once taught me NEVER to order Long Island Tea.
That's my answer and I'm stickin' to it. Anything added to the tea and Queen will pass out in the sand. Head first.

9. When is the next time you will be beach bound?
That is an excellent question! For which I do not have an answer...however, being "bound" on the beach does not sound like a lot of fun. Sam! Really!

Wow, those houses along the canal are mansions.

Margaritas are fruity. But only two choices - lime or strawberry. And you are right. I did laugh! ;)

Akelamalu - And what about your old friend Mimi from across the pond? I think you forgot to invite her. I am so jealous!!
Have fun and take lots of pictures.
That is wonderful!

Mimi Lenox said...

Charles- They are. We did not stay in a "mansion" but it was nice. I wish I could have found a picture of the real Susie Q.

Bud - NOW I remember....

I'm glad pale is the new tan. Maybe someday freckles will be the new in thing, too, I'm never at a loss for them.

I'm cracking up at the though of Long Island Iced Tea at the beach. I love LIIT, but I too would be passed out and burning up if I drank one while sitting in the sun, beach or backyard!

Your beachy summers sound fun. ;-)

Mimi Lenox said...

Kwizgiver - Pale IS the new tan. We are so in style!

Cat - Mimi + liquor is not a match.

Hi Mimi - LIIT on the beach sounds fun, I haven't tried that. Thanks for the idea *lol*
Reading your #3 reminded me of my siblings, smashing the sandcastles built with our father and each wanting to be buried under the sand... Great beach memories!

Mimi Lenox said...

zt - Oh no. I've started a LIIT epidemic in the blogosphere. Hopefully we'll all blink (that's blog + drink for all you non-blog speakers) responsibly.

Bwahahahahahahahaaaa!

Bound at the beach?

Hehehe.

Mimi Lenox said...

Trav - FINALLY! SOMEbody who gets my joke.
Sigh.

Patti said...

That's funny. I glisten too. Must be the royal blood.

Oh, and I also got your joke...

And be careful. There are sharks in them there waters. They saw one off of Massachusetts this week.

Great post! I was always curious to what the grown-ups were doing too.

Good to know that now, is that it really wasn't that interesting.

Being bound on a beach sounds a different way of spending time!

Anonymous said...

So much in common! Since moving to North Carolina in 1996, I've spent a lot of time at the beach at Pine Knoll Shores, right next door to where you used to go.

I don't think I've ever had a bad day at the beach. But I'm discovering that the mountains are almost as good.

Linda said...

Why I was just at a beach last night to watch fireworks! No swimming was involved, though! I don't do that swimsuit stuff as people tend to mistake me for a beached whale and keep trying to drag me back into the water!

Mimi Lenox said...

Shannon - You crack me up.

Milet - Yours were great too! Welcome to the castle.

Mimi Lenox said...

Sanni - That "boyfriend", whom we both know, is always right about such things and wouldn't have let me get too far with the "tea" anyway.

Mimi Lenox said...

Tink - You're right. Much more interesting when it's a mystery. Most things are.

Mimi Lenox said...

Jean-luc - Yep. The conversation has now turned (thanks to Shannon) from drinking too much on the beach to kinky beach doins'....Never a dull moment in the blogosphere.

Mimi Lenox said...

Lee - Pine Knolls Shore is a great area. I love the mini forest that separates the roadway between Fort Macon and Salter Path. We spent a lot of time at the Fort too. The beaches were private and never crowded. Perfect for a family vacation.

Footnote: My ex-husband proposed to me on that beach with one knee down in the sand under a moonlit sky. (I should have put that in my story!) On second thought maybe not.....Then there's the divorce....giggling.

Mimi Lenox said...

Linda - STOP IT. Don't make me come up there.
You are always out and about doing something fun. We could go shopping! For bathing suits. And don't argue with me.

I'm still the Queen ya know!

Anonymous said...

I'll have some of that sweet tea, but can ya bring it to me 'cause my toes are buried in the sand?! :)

Mimi Lenox said...

Tish Coming right up little pregnant one. Anything for you.

Sandee said...

You glisten and I glow and I'm not even a queen. How fun Mimi. I even laughed at you fruity margaritas. You are a hoot. Have a great day. Big hug. :)

Diana_CT said...

I am with you, a nice pitcher iced tea or freshly made lemonade is perfect for the beach.

Mimi Lenox said...

Sandee - You do not have to be royalty to glisten and glow. I would expect that from you my friend..

Diana - Crazy Sam had us all wanting to go to the beach this weekend. I think I need to make a plan....

Julie said...

Bound at the beach? Well that's what the seaweed is for...isn't it?

Mimi Lenox said...

Julie - That cracked me up.
