Bruises and Blues

(Bloggingham sunset last night)

I give.

Last week I rediscovered a favorite blues singer of mine, Eva Cassidy. I'd recently attended a lecture comparing vocal styles in which her rendition of "What A Wonderful World" was compared with Louis Armstrong's version and Joey Ramone's rock recording. Vocal timbre couldn't get more diverse in that crowd. As I listened to her "Wonderful World" recording, I was struck once again by the raw emotional edge in her voice. Another favorite of mine is her now famous version of "Over The Rainbow" - adapted by Katherine McPhee as of late. The video below was captured at Washington's Blues Alley. Her voice and musicality always stops me in my tracks. I believe every ounce of music that comes out of her. I think that's what counts.

She died in 1996 of advanced stage melanoma at the age of thirty-three. When I'm in a funk and need to just sit with my bruises for awhile - I find that her music takes me to a true place.

Today, I give.

Very touching. Knowing how she died seems to add another layer of complexity to her already incredible voice.

Hoping you find peace and that your bruises heal quickly.

I am a big fan of Eva Cassidy. So talented, so tragic...and yet we'll always have the gift of her voice.

Damn. If she had to leave early, I'm glad she left us with that.

You may enjoy a brilliant jazzy version of Over The Rainbow done by Sam Harris. His voice has always given me chills.

Hi Mimi,
That was really so beautiful... I was getting chills, running down my spine also, listening to Eva.
It is really sad to hear that she died at such a young age :(

She is truly in heaven, beyond the rainbow. May she rest in peace.

See you soon, Mimi.

Eva was virtually undiscovered most of her life. It's just a shame. Self-promotion was not her lifestyle or ambition. What she could have become would have been amazing to watch. I am thankful we have what we have of her incredible instrument recorded. My other favorite of hers is Fields of Gold. It's also on YouTube.
