Beach Report ~ Flying Umbrellas and Floating Chairs

Do not attempt this at home.
Do not attempt this at all.

I tried to erect an umbrella. By myself. On the beach. In the wind. Who knew there would be wind at the beach? I was having a perfectly lovely early morning with my bee cup full of coffee at post sunrise (I slept one hour too long...ya think the sun could have waited an hour for me but no....) when I realized I'd forgotten the umbrella. Again.
AND the sunscreen. So I traipse back to the condo to get all of the above.
While I was gone my chair nearly floated away in the Atlantic.

Undeterred and insane I move my Queen chair back closer to the dunes and attempt the big erection process that didn't sound right but isn't that what they say I'm sorry if I offended your delicate sensibilities in the construction business? Oh. Right. This is the DEStruction business.

This is where the trouble started.

A gust of wind the size of Hurricane Bertha I tell ya caught me up UNDER the pink and blue contraption and carried me down the beach whether I wanted to go or not. Do you know how hard it is to maintain royal dignity with a vinyl umbrella attached to your body? Darn near impaled an unsuspecting teenager who was buried in the sand with only her little blond head sticking out. I wish I could have seen the look on her face but I was too busy trying to SEE and untangle myself from the camera strap around my neck while trying to keep my hat on which picked a dandy of a moment to come untied.

I need a nap.

just this summer i discovered, due to gale force winds on the beach, that if I plant the umbrella pole behind the chair, bracing it using the legs, it has less chance of thinking it's Mary Poppins...

Love your photos! As I was reading and scrolling down, I was expecting the final shot to be of a giant umbrella worthy of one of Christo's installations!

It may have been a trying experience, but it made an engaging blog post, Your Highness.

yes, very serious about the lauching of poor Bella! It was no small ask, but the clsp-hook thingger that you use to push the umbrella up to the open position got stuck on Bellas bathing suit (she sat on the sand, and hung herself up). We were getting ready to leave, and everyone was getting stuff together, and the wind picked up. Launched the upmrella to`*open* and too poor boo for a little ride. Scared the crap out of us all! lucky it was just a quick gust!
