Migraine Me-Me

This picture depicts the zig-zag visual disturbances that occur during a migraine aura. In real time these slivers and spots bounce in front of your eyes at a rapid rate causing nausea and a sickening foreshadowing of the pain that often follows. Mine look like ghostly black spots at times that float and flit and make me squint. I know my triggers - MSG, stress, perfumes, raw onions, red wine, spicy food, no sleep, forgetting to eat, fluorescent light, temperature changes etc etc - but sometimes it sneaks up and I can't get to the medicine cabinet fast enough or I'm at work.

A quick drink of caffeine will often delay the real migraine until the Duradrin kicks in but lately these dastardly demons have danced non-stop just behind my eyes and refuse to go away. Just when I think it's going away it comes back.
The aura wants to taunt me. Chasing it away is exhausting. Ugh.

So I'll be sitting with a hot rag on my forehead (that's so attractive) wearing dark sunglasses
and drinking hot tea while Homer howls.
He's miffed that he didn't win a Bl-Oscar. I really wish he would shut up.

He's getting on my last bl-erve.

Mimi Grumpy

I've never had a migraine, but my mother would get really bad ones. She would just go to bed in her dark bedroom and sometimes wouldn't emerge for a couple of days. I so remember.

I hope you feel better soon. There is nothing worse than a grumpy queen.

Big hug and lotsa lovies. :)

I'm like Sandee's mother... could take me a couple of days in a dark room before it's over.
Temperature changes are my big trigger.
Rest - get well - and muzzle Homer.

I get those too!!! I do not get the pain...lucky me...I have Optical Migraines. Whichever side of my head the migraine occurs, I lose the sight in that eye. I have the squiggly vision and spots first. Upon onset, I take 2 advil, go lay down in a dark room, close my eyes and in 45 minutes it is gone. Sometimes my speech is effected and once my mouth drooped and I was rushed to the ER with a possible stroke! Now that was scarey! Hope you feel better soon.

I feel for you, Mimi. If I get a migraine I can't take any meds or caffeine. All I can do is sleep. Usually I go to bed, sleep for 12 hours, and I'm a brand new person the next day.

Graham whispers... "What you need is the soft fingers of an Englishman gently massaging your temples.

I am sooo sorry to hear that you are experiencing one of those horrid migranes. I do hope it passes soon.

I had a cluster of occular migraines in January, then a couple more in February. I know stress is my biggest trigger.

They suck.

I have tried to describe what happens but whenver I do folks just look at me strange. That picture is exactly what happens to me. I've had these horrible headaches since I was in the 5th grade and that was a long, long, long time ago. But at the beginning of the year, right when I went back to work after the holidays, I started having the vision spasms (as I call them every other day). Although I can keep the headache from coming with an motrin or advil - I was really worried so I went to the doctor. Learned that my blood pressure was up. So you might want to just get that checked out.

I'm feeling you!

BTW: tag, you're it. Got a feeling you'll enjoy this one.

Way back in the dark ages when I was in high school I got a couple of migraines but fortunately they seem to be something that I outgrew with age. I can so remember sitting in English class and watching the blackboard dissolve in front of my eyes while knowing I was in for a trip to the nurse's office and a very bad time of it.

I sure hope that you're feeling better now and that Homer gets over his sulking soon! Dogs can be such a royal pain sometimes!

sigh - That's supposed to be "feeling BETTER today".

Maybe I lost a few brain cells too.....

Migraines are the devil! I hate, hate, hate them. I get one almost every Saturday, and I think it's because that is the day I work at the equipment repair shop, so I am in a closed building with lots o' fumes and loud noises. Some Saturdays, I crawl to the bathroom to puke and then crawl back to bed and squeeze my head between my arms to prevent it from blowing up.

In other words... I can relate!

Oh, honey! My migraines come on slowly and relentlessly and once they are with me, I cannot move. Literally. Whereas you seem sensitive to light, with me, it's motion. I have to try to find a way to hold my head and KEEP IT THAT WAY or the pain is excruciating. Nauseating. My doctor gave me Naproxen (Alleve) the size of a football and if I pop one at the first sign, I'm fine. If not, it's hours until I'm able to function.

Just remember that they come and go and be good to yourself in the interim.

I get killer ones where I have to take a whole lotta tylenol and lay down in a dark room forever.

Smorg said...

Yikes! Hope you're feeling better by now, Mimi. I don't have migraine, but it sure doesn't sound pleasant... especially on a Friday!

That sounds downright awful. I have heard about how debilitating migraines can be. I do hope it passes quickly.

Sorry to read this, Your Majesty. I haven't had one in a while, but I've had them. I wake up in the morning with them..the nausea, the incredible sensitivity to light and sound. Yuck.

take care, Mimi

Misty - You said it. They are the devil himself. Feel better.

Gal - "Being good to myself" is my downfall. Seriously. I do not know when to stop working, writing, yada yada when I get home.

I need to fix that.

Mimi Lenox said...

Yaya - Thank you. They are indeed.

Claudia - Thank you, my friend.

Tammy - Tylenol would not touch these. It has to be prescription. Dark room. Oh yes.
And sunglasses.

Mimi Lenox said...

Smorg - It has been going on for several days. Thank you. I'm so much better now.

Mimi Lenox said...

Ricardo - Appreciate it. Be thankful you don't suffer from them.

Mimi Lenox said...

Patti - LIGHT! OUCH.
They often hit me first thing in the morning too.

I know this is a late post but I was in the ER this weekend with one of my worst migraines ever!! I noticed you said you put a hot cloth on your fore head...that opens up the blood vessels and increases the pain. If you put a cold one on that decreases the flow of blood and decreases the pain. Just a thought! : ) I do know that we all have our own ways of taking the pain away!
